White Fillings

White Fillings Sydney

If your tooth feels painful or sensitive, you might have a cavity. Cavities are caused by tooth decay. If this isn’t treated, it can damage more of the tooth and spread to your other teeth.

The good news is that cavities and tooth decay can be treated quickly and painlessly with white fillings. Our skilled dentists at Mosman 3D Dental place fillings in a single visit, using natural-looking materials that perfectly blend in with your tooth colour.

If you or your child need a filling, call our team today on (02) 9969 8610 to schedule an appointment at our Mosman clinic or book online.

What is a white filling?

White fillings are made from a composite resin that a dentist builds up inside a cavity to restore a tooth’s strength and appearance. Unlike metal fillings, white composite fillings won’t be noticeable in your mouth. Our dentists will select a shade of resin that perfectly matches the surrounding tooth colour.

Composite fillings also avoid the safety concerns of metal amalgam fillings, which contain toxic mercury. If you have old metal fillings that you want to replace, our dentists may be able to replace them with a white filling.

Most cavities can be treated with a filling, but if a tooth is more severely damaged, or less of its structure is remaining, we may recommend another option such as an inlay, onlay or crown.

What happens when I get a filling?

Our dentists may recommend a filling if you visit us with a toothache or other symptoms, or if we spot signs of a cavity or tooth decay during your routine check-up.

Placing a filling is one of the most straightforward and routine dental procedures and involves the following steps:

  • Carefully removing the decayed part of the tooth
  • Cleaning and disinfecting the cavity to remove bacteria
  • Applying an adhesive bonding agent
  • Filling the tooth with composite resin in layers
  • Hardening the resin with a blue light
  • Shaping and polishing the filling for a smooth finish

Depending on the size of the cavity, a filling can usually be completed in less than an hour. You’ll be able to eat and drink as normal shortly after a filling is placed, but you should avoid hot or cold food and drinks for a few hours.

Does a filling hurt?

A filling is normally a painless procedure and doesn’t usually require anaesthetic. This is because your dentist will only operate on the outer layers of the tooth, not the interior that contains nerve endings. However, we may recommend local anaesthetic if you have a larger cavity, or if you have sensitive teeth or gums.

The gum around the tooth may feel sore during and shortly after treatment. Your treated tooth may also feel more sensitive to temperature for a few days.
