How Long Does It Take to Straighten Teeth?

Straightening crooked or misaligned teeth with orthodontic treatment is usually a long-term commitment, as the teeth are gradually shifted into their new alignment over several months or several years. How long it takes can vary depending on how much straightening is needed, the treatment option you choose, and how well you comply with your dentist’s instructions.

How long does it take to straighten teeth with braces?

For most people, orthodontic treatment using braces can take 12–18 months, but it may be shorter or take longer, depending on the case. If you only need minor corrections, short-term orthodontic treatment may be completed in less than 6 months, while more complex cases can take 2–3 years.

Your dentist will give you an idea of how long your treatment is likely to take after they assess your teeth. Conventional metal braces can generally straighten teeth faster than alternatives such as ceramic braces and lingual braces.

How long does it take to straighten teeth with Invisalign®?

Invisalign clear aligners and similar aligner systems are a popular alternative to braces for adults and older teens who want a more discreet treatment. Like braces, Invisalign treatment is generally completed in 12–18 months, though more complex cases can take longer. Minor misalignment can often be corrected in a few months using systems like Invisalign Go®.

Clear aligners can be as effective as braces for treating minor to moderate orthodontic issues, but they may be less effective for some complex cases. As the aligners can be removed when eating and cleaning your teeth, the treatment also relies more on patient compliance, as results may be less predictable if you don’t wear your aligners for the recommended 22 hours a day.

Can I straighten teeth instantly?

If your teeth only need minor corrections, it may be possible to alter their appearance in a single visit to the dental clinic with cosmetic dentistry treatments rather than orthodontics. Your dentist may be able to place same-day crowns or dental veneers over the teeth to modify their shape, alignment or other aspects of their appearance, but this won’t be an option in all cases.

Is teeth straightening permanent?

Teeth straightening with orthodontics has a high success rate when it’s provided by a qualified and experienced dentist, but in some cases teeth may begin to shift from their new alignment, which can require repeat treatments. That’s why it’s recommended to wear a retainer in most cases to hold your new smile in position. Your dentist will explain whether a retainer is needed and how long for.
