Can a Knocked Out Tooth Be Saved?
Losing a tooth is a serious dental emergency and needs the attention of a dentist as soon as possible. Not only can this prevent further injuries and other complications, but your dentist may even be able to reattach the tooth, depending on its condition and how quickly you can get to the dental clinic.

Can an adult tooth be saved?
If a permanent tooth is knocked out, but still intact, it may be possible to reattach it if you can see a dentist in less than an hour. Here’s what to do:
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing end). Avoid touching the roots (the pointy end).
- Remove any dirt. You can lick the tooth to clean it using saliva or rinse it in plain water for up to 10 seconds.
- Try to slide the tooth back into the socket and bite down on a clean cloth or gauze. If it doesn’t fit, or feels uncomfortable, you can try holding it in your cheek (if you’re sure you won’t swallow it) or place it in a container with some milk or saliva to keep it moist.
- Bring the tooth to a dental clinic as soon as possible. Your dentist will inspect the tooth and your mouth and let you know if it’s possible to reattach it. This involves placing splints on either side to support the tooth while it re-bonds with the jaw.
Can a baby tooth be saved?
No. Unlike permanent teeth, primary (baby) teeth can’t be reattached, as the next tooth is growing in the gum beneath.
If you’re not sure whether it’s a primary or permanent tooth, follow the instructions above, but don’t force the tooth back into its socket, as this could damage a permanent tooth underneath. Bring the tooth to your dentist in a container of milk or saliva.
What if the tooth can’t be saved?
Even if a tooth looks too damaged to save, or you won’t make it to the dentist in time, it’s still important to see a dentist as soon as possible to avoid further problems. They can check your mouth for any damage and recommend any treatments that could help you, including discussing tooth replacement and restoration options such as a crown or bridge, denture or implant.
What if I lose a crown or denture?
It’s also important to see a dentist if you lose an artificial tooth or restoration, such as a crown, filling or denture. If these are lost or damaged, this may affect your bite, your appearance, or your ability to eat and speak normally. Your dentist will check for any other damage and recommend restoring the tooth as soon as possible.
