Oral Hygiene Mosman
Healthy teeth and gums help you to eat your favourite foods, speak clearly, and avoid toothache and other issues. Taking good care of your oral hygiene with good daily habits and routine dental visits can help you avoid serious and costly problems later.
If you’re due for a check-up, or there’s something you want to see a dentist about, call Mosman 3D Dental today (02) 9969 8610 to book an oral health assessment with our experienced dentists. We also provide oral hygiene treatments to polish and protect your teeth.
Why is oral hygiene important?
Oral hygiene is important at all ages. As well as helping you to maintain an attractive smile, good oral hygiene care reduces plaque levels on your teeth and lowers your risk of developing dental diseases like tooth decay and gum disease.
Poor oral hygiene can eventually lead to tooth loss and other serious problems. Gum disease is also linked with other serious health risks in other parts of the body, including heart disease, diabetes and stroke.
What happens during my visit?
When you visit our dentists for your regular check-up, we’ll discuss any issues or concerns you may have about your oral health before conducting a detailed examination of your teeth, gums and mouth. If we notice any signs of problems, we’ll discuss treatment options or home care tips.
As part of your visit, we’ll also offer to professionally clean, scale and polish your teeth to remove any hardened calculus deposits that have built up since your last visit and apply fluoride to help protect against further plaque. We can also offer advice about how to improve your oral care routine and the best products to use.
How often do I need to see a dentist?
We generally recommend that people visit our Mosman dentists every six months, as this improves the chance of any problems being caught at an early stage, when they may be easier to treat and before they cause permanent damage. However, we may recommend seeing our dentists more often if you need help improving your oral health, or if we’re monitoring an ongoing condition.
Children should have their first dental visit within six months of their first tooth erupting and regular check-ups afterwards. This allows our dentists to check that their teeth are developing well and to help them avoid problems.
Daily care tips
Oral hygiene care isn’t only provided by your dentist. It’s also important to take good care of your teeth, gums and oral health every day by:
- Brushing your teeth at least twice a day, using fluoride toothpaste and a soft toothbrush
- Cleaning between your teeth daily, using floss or another interdental cleaner
- Eating a healthy, balanced diet, and limiting sugar and acids
- Drinking plenty of water, especially fluoridated water
- Avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol
- Wearing a mouthguard if you’re playing sports
