When is snoring a problem?

The sound of snoring is the vibration of soft tissues in your throat or nose as air passes over them when you breathe during sleep. You will be more likely to snore if you have an excess of these tissues or your airways are narrower, making breathing obstructions more likely.

Mild snoring doesn't usually cause problems, but regular or loud snoring could disrupt your sleep. Poor quality sleep can make you feel tired and irritable during the day, and never getting enough sleep may affect your concentration and your physical and mental health.

What is obstructive sleep apnoea?

Loud snoring or waking up choking or gasping can be signs of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). This is a more serious sleep disorder that occurs when the throat becomes fully or partially blocked during sleep. This causes breathing to be interrupted for a short time, before air is forced through the airways and you wake up forcefully.

If you have OSA, you may feel tired and fatigued during the day or have memory problems, difficulty concentrating, or mood disorders. Studies have also found links between sleep apnoea and a higher risk of developing health problems including diabetes, heart attacks, high blood pressure and strokes. By affecting your concentration and reaction times, sleep apnoea can also make driving or operating machinery dangerous, even fatal.

How is sleep apnoea treated?

If you choose Invisalign, Invisalign Go or other clear aligners at Mosman 3D Dental, our dentists will first take digital impressions of your teeth that are used to design your custom aligners. These are made from a soft but sturdy material that’s designed to fit comfortably over your teeth, like a mouthguard.

Each set of aligners is used for around two weeks before being replaced with the next set, gradually moving your teeth into their new position. We’ll schedule regular appointments at our clinic so our dentist can provide you with your next few sets of aligners and help with any issues you might have.
