Why Are Dental Check-ups Important?
Oral health problems like tooth decay and gum disease can develop rapidly, and they don’t always have obvious signs, so it’s important to keep up with your regular dental visits.
Seeing a dentist once or twice a year improves the chance that problems can be spotted and treated early. Regular oral hygiene treatments are also important for lowering your oral health and overall health risks.

Preventing problems
Prevention is always better than cure, and the more often you visit the dentist, the more likely it is that any problems will be caught and addressed in their early stages. Delaying routine check-ups can increase the risk of problems developing, which can cause more serious damage and complications, and can be more difficult and expensive to treat.
As well as oral health problems, dentists can also screen for other problems during routine check-ups, such as orthodontic issues in children and oral cancer in older patients.
What will happen during my check-up?
Our team will make sure you know what to expect during your visit to Mosman 3D Dental. A standard oral hygiene check-up includes:
- Discussion of your general oral health and any concerns you might have
- Examination of your teeth and gums, which may include an x-ray
- Gentle scaling and polishing of your teeth to remove calculus (tartar)
- Fluoride treatment to help lower your risk of tooth decay
- Oral health advice and answering any questions you have
How often should I see a dentist?
How often you need a check-up is based on your individual risk factors, which can change over time.
We generally recommend visiting our dental clinic every 6 months for the best chance of identifying problems early and to help you maintain optimal oral health. However, some people may only need to visit once a year, while others may benefit from having a check-up every 3 months, or other intervals.
You can make an appointment with your dentist outside of your scheduled check-ups if you need help or advice. We also offer emergency appointments for problems that can’t wait.
When should kids visit the dentist?
It’s important that children have dental check-ups at least as often as adults, as their teeth and jaws are developing so quickly that problems may be harder to address if they’re not identified early. Regular dental visits in childhood can result in better visiting habits and better oral health in adulthood.
We recommend that children have their first dental visit between their first and second birthday, or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing.
